Dermal Filler Injections - Introduction
Dermal fillers are a safe and instant way of plumping lines and
creases, helping you appear younger. The added bonus is that they
prevent the lines in your skin from becoming deeper. And there is
little or no downtime.
Fillers are marvelous in that they
can make small alterations to your appearance, which can make a big
difference. Your new look is immediate and you can choose from
medium-term fillers or a facial filler that lasts up to seven years.
Great for:
• Frown lines (worry or anger lines) between the eyes
• Plumping lips
• Scarring, including acne scarring
• Creases and folds around the forehead, nose, mouth and eyes
Dermal Filler Injections - How they work
The lowdown
The gel-like filler when placed in age lines, creases and
depressions (such as smile lines and smoker's lines) prevents the skin
from easily folding, therefore creating a smoother appearance and
protecting you from advanced ageing and further collagen loss in these
areas.
When used to fill and enhance facial features, such as the
lips, cheeks, chin and nose, where volume is lacking, not only does the
dermal filler perform a cosmetic enhancement, it prevents any folds and
creases from becoming deeper by acting as a cushioning pad – plus it
may also stimulate new collagen growth in the base of creases.
How long does the procedure take?
Usually 10-20 minutes. You may
require up to 3 sessions,
depending on the size or type of area targeted.
Dermal Filler Injections - Treatments
What happens during the procedure?
The
dermal filler is injected into the desired facial area. Most injections
are painless due to you receiving a local anaesthetic, which wears off
in 30-40 minutes.
How long will my recovery be and what can I expect?
In
most cases you will be able to return to your normal activities
straightaway. There is usually no discomfort once the local anaesthetic
has worn off. Swelling and some redness is apparent for a few hours.
You may also see a few tiny needle prick marks and some local bruising.
These can be easily masked with make-up. In the case of lip
enhancement, younger people will recover overnight, but older people
(with more shrunken and scarred lips) can expect reasonable swelling
for 2-3 days.
Aftercare
It
is important to revisit the clinic for a follow-up dermal filler
consultation 3-5 days after your treatment. The clinician will mould
and massage the gel padding to ensure there are no lumps, fix any
slight movements(which is common) and check if it is providing the
maximum repair/support.

As they are a natural body product, Medium-term Dermal Fillers and
Long-term Dermal Fillers are slowly absorbed into the body and will
require topping up (Medium-term after 6-12 months and Long-term after
16-24 months), depending on the type and the amount used and the site
injected. Note that the more product used, and the thicker and firmer
the version of the product, the longer it will remain in place. Also,
the less an area moves, the longer it will last.
A permanent
dermal filler will last at least 5-7 years in the area it has been
injected and it cannot be removed. Therefore, you need to be sure that
you want the area filled and you need to choose a reliable injector. Dr
Cussell at the Facial Rejuvenation Clinic is highly qualified and has
completed hundreds of procedures.
