WHY ARE WE CALLING THIS TREATMENT "WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS" AND WHY ARE WE NOT ALLOWED TO NAME THE PRODUCT?
Australian TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) regulations have prevented the naming of this well known treatment as it is deemed to be direct advertising of a "doctor only" medically prescribed S4 medication. It is an extremely safe treatment that has been used for 40 years in general medicine and over 20 years in facial cosmetic medicine, providing It is administered by a qualified doctor who has been well trained in the correct technique. WHAT ARE WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS?
Wrinkle prevention Injections are a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoother, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.
Wrinkle prevention Injections are a dilute, purified form of a protein, which is an extremely effective muscle relaxant. It is a medical protein derived from the a bacteria under special laboratory conditions.
Although wrinkle prevention injections is derived from a bacterium, as are many of our other commonly
used medicines, it is able to be used for treatment because it is applied
in extremely small amounts and when applied properly does not spread
outside the immediate muscles into which it is injected.
HOW DO THE WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS REMOVE WRINKLES?
Wrinkle prevention blocks impulses from the nerve
to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. It relaxes
the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlaying skin
remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract
in a normal fashion, so that normal facial expressions are unaffected.
WHAT PARTS OF THE BODY CAN BE TREATED?
The most common areas for the use of Wrinkle prevention
are the “frown lines” between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines,
and the crow's feet or “smile lines” around the eyes.
It is also being used to shape eyebrows,
to produce an arched eyebrow or a flared eyebrow. It can be used in certain
people for treatment of the vertical lines above the top lip, the “smoker’s
lines”. Also for areas around the cheeks, nose and lower jaw muscles, under
certain conditions.
Wrinkle prevention can be used where muscular activity
causes an undesirable pull on the skin on the face or neck. Good examples
of these are the ‘bunny’ lines on the nose, puckering of the chin caused
by activity of the mentalis muscle and the platysmal bands, causing wrinkles
in the neck.
Wrinkle prevention is extremely effective in treating
local hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). Treatment of the underarm area
or palms will reduce sweating by more than 90% and lasts up to 9 months.
It is also very useful for sweaty armpits for people who have an intolerance
of antiperspirant deodorants.
In addition to its use for cosmetic reasons, Wrinkle prevention Injections are also used to treat patients of most age groups in a variety of therapeutic indications where muscle spasm is a problem, including cerebral palsy in children, movement disorders of the head, neck, shoulder or face, in treatment of some types of headaches, in several eye muscle disorders in ophthalmology and in treatment of some oesophageal disorders.
HOW IS IT USED?
A tiny amount of Wrinkle prevention Injections are injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic (or movement) wrinkle.
When Wrinkle prevention Injections are injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.
Wrinkle prevention Injections are administered using a very fine sterile disposable syringe and a fine-gauge needle to inject into the muscle. The number of injections required varies depending upon what part of the face is being treated.
WHAT WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS ARE NOT!
Wrinkle prevention Injections are not magic. Wrinkle prevention Injections will not radically change your appearance or make you look like you've had a facelift. It will not freeze your facial expressions. It softens them and works where you want it to.
It does not travel throughout the body and
only affects the localized tiny muscle that it is injected into.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE TREATMENT
Your doctor will determine exactly where to use Wrinkle prevention Injections to achieve the best results. No anaesthetic is required. Treatment takes around 10 to 20 minutes. A tiny amount of Wrinkle prevention Injections are injected into selected facial muscles. Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients describe it as an ant bite sting for a few seconds.
It takes 2-3 days for Wrinkle prevention Injections to begin taking affect and around 7-10 days to see the full effect. Wrinkle prevention Injections lasts for up to four months. The result will "wear off" gradually and expression lines slowly return. This is because our body re-grows new nerve endings into these muscles. To maintain the effect you will require repeat injections 2-3 times a year.
DOES IT HURT?
A local anaesthetic cream is applied to
the skin and ice is used to minimize the discomfort. Most people find the
treatment quick and easy and not too uncomfortable.
There may be an initial minor sting for the
first few seconds at the injection site. The needles used are tiny micro
needles and once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort.
The patient will experience very mild discomfort lasting for only a few
seconds as each muscle is injected. There is no pain at all afterwards,
at the injection site. Some people can have a mild sensation of “fullness”
or “pressure” for a while afterwards and some get a headache. This is usually
easily relieved with panadol, but is usually not necessary.
IS THERE ANYTHING TO SEE AFTER TREATMENT?
No. There is usually no obvious sign to see
on the skin. Most people can go straight back to work. Occasionally there
may be a slight and transient bruise or faint pin prick mark and this can
be easily covered with makeup if required. Sometimes and only when treating
the smile lines under the eye, a bruise may appear which will stay in this
softer skin area for a week, but can again be covered with makeup.
Muscle relaxation will not start for a day
or so and will not be complete for a week.
ARE WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTION TREATMENTS SAFE?
Wrinkle prevention Injections has been used medically for over 30 years and cosmetically for about 20 years and there have been over a thousand published medical studies and trials around the world involving treatment using Wrinkle prevention Injections .Thus Wrinkle prevention Injections are an extremely well studied and understood treatment that has been around for a very long time.
Its use in cosmetic medicine is extremely widespread all over the world with millions of people having treatment each year. There have been no dangerous long term side effects known to be caused by Wrinkle prevention Injections.
Wrinkle prevention Injections have been used safely for treatment of muscle spacticity in children from the age of 3 & 4 with cerebral palsy for many years and in much larger doses than we use for cosmetic applications in facial muscles. These young children usually have more than 10 times the amount than used for facial muscles.
PProvided that Wrinkle prevention Injections are administered by a practitioner with adequate medical training, there should be no serious risks. Any side-effects are minor and temporary, as discussed above.
Although research to date has not shown any risk to the developing foetus caused by exposure to Wrinkle prevention Injections, in the interests of good medical practice, it is best avoided in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS?
In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects are temporary and localised to the area of injection. There have been no permanent side effects of Wrinkle prevention Injections reported.
The vast majority of patients experience
no side-effects whatsoever.
Occasionally, a small bruise at the injection site may occur which will disappear after a few days and can be covered up with makeup. This is relatively rare however, and should be prevented with a careful injection technique including ice and local pressure.
Mild headaches have been reported in a very
few instances, but are again rare. On the contrary, many people who suffer
“tension” headaches caused by “tight” muscles usually loose these with
Wrinkle prevention treatment.
In extremely rare cases a reversible condition
known as Ptosis, heaviness of an eyelid, or brow droop may occur. Proper
regard to dosages and location of injection in susceptible muscle patterns
should avoid this condition. Lid ptosis is reversible also, by using eye
drops for the few weeks if it may occur, which is extremely unlikely.
DO WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS FREEZE MY FACE?
No. Wrinkle prevention Injections only relaxes the overactive muscle underneath the dynamic wrinkle. The other elements of facial expression remain normal.
Our smile is created by the muscles around our mouth and cheeks. These muscles are not treated with Wrinkle prevention Injections by us, and thus our smile is unaffected and natural.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
A typical treatment of the frown lines, forehead or crow's feet area takes approximately ten to twenty minutes, although we allow at least thirty minutes for a consultation involving a detailed explanation of what to expect. We like you to be fully informed and confident to proceed with treatment.
We ask you to sign a “Consent to Treatment
Form”, after having satisfied yourself that you have been adequately informed.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT LAST?
You will begin to see noticeable effects
within two or three days, as the muscles begin to become weaker. The effect
will be complete in 7 to 10 days.
We generally like to review all new patients one to two weeks after injections to ensure that the desired effect has been achieved. We guarantee to completely relax the muscles that were injected. If not, then a free top up at this follow-up will be given. We want the procedure to work well for you so that you will be happy to continue on with this wrinkle prevention treatment. Sometimes, residual movement in a nearby area will occur and it may be desirable to add further Wrinkle prevention Injections to other nearby muscles. There may be a charge for this additional Wrinkle prevention Injections if it is considered to be a separate area.
The effect lasts for 3 (to 4) months initially, with the muscle strength gradually returning to normal as the muscles grow new nerve endings. The second and subsequent treatments, should ideally be repeated before the muscle strength returns to normal again, thus ensuring a recruitment effect producing an enhanced and longer lasting result each time. It is usually suggested that Wrinkle prevention Injections be given three times in the first few years and if kept up, will probably only require further Wrinkle prevention Injections for maintenance twice a year.
If you choose not to have further Wrinkle prevention treatments
your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles
will gradually revert to their pre-treatment levels. The only thing is
that your wrinkles will recommence to age in appearance again. However,
if you have had 5 or 10 years of Wrinkle prevention treatment say, you will look 5 to
10 years younger than you would have looked, without the Wrinkle prevention treatment.
So, why would you want to cease it!
IS IT SUITABLE FOR MEN?
Wrinkle prevention is equally effective on men
and woman. Because it is effective for stress (frown) and angry, worry lines,
it is popular for many businessmen. It leaves them looking more refreshed,
less angry and more approachable.
Most men need slightly more Wrinkle prevention Injections to achieve the same result due to their larger muscle mass.
WILL MY LINES LOOK WORSE IF I CHOOSE NOT TO CONTINUE TREATMENTS?
No. Your lines will gradually revert to their pre-treated appearance. As stated above, your age-lines will then continue to develop, but you will have the benefit of having slowed down the ageing process for the number of years that you did have the Wrinkle prevention Injections.
CAN WRINKLE PREVENTION TREATMENTS BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?
Wrinkle prevention Injections are often used in combination with all the dermal fillers and ideally should be used to prolong their duration of action. Similarly, it is best to use it in combination with the new self-generating "new-collagen" production treatments.
ARE WRINKLE PREVENTION INJECTIONS USED INSTEAD OF PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY DERMAL FILLERS OR SELF-GENERATING COLLAGEN TREATMENTS?
These treatments all do different things.
Each of the above treatments has their own, specific advantages.
Wrinkle prevention Injections are often combined with permanent and temporary filling agents, especially where deep permanent creases have already formed.
The cost is variable depending on the number of units of Wrinkle prevention Injections required to achieve the desired result.
Beware of the discounters offering "cheap" Wrinkle prevention treatments. Often inadequate units of Wrinkle prevention Injections are used in a diluted amount that may not produce the desired result or last as long.
Most areas need at least 20 to 25 units each.
It is cheaper per unit if two or more areas
are treated at the same time.
Each person will be quoted according to
their requirements, at the time of consultation.
