What are wrinkles?
Wrinkles are folds in the skin caused by the repetitive movement of muscles. Squinting our eyes, frowning when we concentrate and laughing and smiling are all potential causes of wrinkles.

When we are young, these wrinkles ‘resolve’ when we relax the muscles.  As we age, changes in the quality of our skin’s collagen due to continuous muscle contraction cause more permanent lines to be created. The wrinkle becomes a permanent scar on our skin as the collagen is squeezed out from the base of the wrinkle.

How do we prevent / reduce wrinkles?
By preventing carefully selected muscles from repeatedly contracting, we can minimise or prevent wrinkles. When wrinkle inhibitors are injected correctly, by a experienced and qualified practitioner, there should not be any side effects on your normal range of movement.

Wrinkle prevention injections can and should be combined with other facial rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers, IPL facial rejuvenation, collagen treatments and good quality skin care products.

Is this used instead of dermal fillers?
Preventatives and fillers do different things. Preventatives are often combined with fillers where deep, permanent creases have already formed. Collagen regeneration treatments are also best used in conjunction with wrinkle prevention to prevent further wrinkles and prolong the effectiveness.

How long will the treatment take?
10 to 20 minutes.  The doctor will determine exactly where to use the treatment to achieve the best results.

Is it painful?
A local anaesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to treatment. Most patients find treatment quick and easy, and not uncomfortable: some describe it as an ant-sting bite for a few seconds. You will be given an icepack after the treatment to minimise any redness or swelling to the area.

What are the possible side effects?
There is little swelling or redness. Some patients can have a sensation of ‘fullness’ for a short time after treatment.

In the hands of our very experienced physician, the products we use are very safe and have been used by doctors for nearly 30 years, by millions of clients across the world. This is one of the most studied and researched treatments with no long-term reported side effects.

How long will it last?
The treatment will take 2-3 days to begin and 7–10 days to reach maximum effect, which will last for 3 to 6 months, and the results will ‘wear off’ gradually.

How often will I need it?
The second and subsequent treatments should ideally be repeated before the muscle returns to full strength, ensuring a longer lasting result each time. It is suggested 4 treatments per year in the first few years, and twice per year thereafter.

If you choose to discontinue treatment, the muscle will return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pre-treatment state, and continue to develop.

Can anyone have it?
Although research to date has not shown any risk, in the interest of good medical practice, we would not recommend this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What should I consider when choosing this treatment?
Whether or not you choose to use The Facial Rejuvenation Clinic for your treatment, be aware that using inadequate number of units of this treatment in order to reduce the cost, dilutes the effect and you may not receive the desired result or it may not last as long as expected.

Pre Treatment Care
Although bruising is uncommon, the following can reduce the incidence:

  • Discontinue aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (e.g. brufen, Ibuprofen, Voltarol) for ten days prior to treatment.Paracetamol is permitted.
  • Avoid Vitamin E supplements for two days prior to treatment. Regular multivitamins are permitted.
  • Remove all facial makeup in any area that you may wish to have treated upon arrival to the office.
  • Some patients indicate that taking 2 paracetamol 1 hour before treatment lessens any discomfort of the injection.

Post Treatment Care

  • Exercise the muscles in the treatment area during the two hours after injection. This encourages the take up the anti-wrinkle treatment.
  • Keep your head up: don’t stoop over or strain
  • Do not massage the area for two hours after treatment to avoid spreading the product into non targeted areas, and reducing the effect, although you can apply light makeup after 30 minutes.
  • Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise and hot baths / saunas for 24 hours.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medication (including Asprin) unless necessary. It is safe to take paracetamol.
